Retirement Savings Increases Stock and Bond Holdings:
Research findings show strong growth in equity and bond assets over the decades—and how the distribution of these capital assets across income groups has shifted over time. Notably, for the bottom 90% of income earners, capital share has significantly increased over time, from around 10% during the 1970s to close to 20% today. Researchers pin this largely to the rise of pension funds and defined contribution plan investing. Read more »
Economic Events
The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had increased considerably in November, posted another gain in December. The Index now stands at 113.7 (1985=100), up from 109.4 in November. The Expectations Index increased sharply from 94.4 to 105.5, but the Present Situation Index decreased from 132.0 last month to 126.1.

Tuesday, the Dow increased 11.23 points (0.06%) to 19,945.04, the NASDAQ gained 24.75 points (0.45%) to finish at 5,487.44, and the S&P 500 was up 5.09 points (0.22%) at 2,268.88. The Russell 2000 closed 15.04 points (1.10%) higher at 1,377.70, and the Wilshire 5000 climbed 61.44 points (0.26%) to 23,733.30.

On the NYSE, 3.1 billion shares changed hands, and on the NASDAQ, 2.9 billion shares traded, with 3 advancing issues for every 2 declining issues on both exchanges.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 5/32, increasing its yield to 2.558%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 11/32, bringing its yield up to 3.136%.
