Although exchange-traded funds, better known as ETFs, have been around for more than 15 years now, they are still somewhat of a “puzzlement” to many plan sponsors (and perhaps to some advisers, certainly in the context of retirement plans).
For those unfamiliar with the term, ETFs are baskets of single stocks resembling mutual funds in structure, but offering additional trading flexibility (they trade during the day, whereas mutual funds typically trade at the market’s close, for instance) and are generally less expensive at the fund level, though there are broker commissions to be considered.
