Work a Dangerous Place

May 3, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Work is hazardous to your health - more so than war, drugs and alcohol, a United Nations report finds.

More than two million people die from work-related accidents or disease every year, up from 1.2 million two years ago, the UN’s International Labor Organization (ILO) said.

Total workplace deaths are now three times the 650,000 deaths per year that result from wars and exceed deaths from alcohol and drug abuse combined.

According to the ILO, the most dangerous occupations in the world are:

  • agriculture
  • construction
  • mining.

Some 350,000 people died from fatal workplace accidents every year, and hazardous substances claimed 340,000 lives. Asbestos was responsible for 100,000 deaths, the report said.
