Matthews to Direct Virginia Retirement System

February 7, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Virginia Retirement System's (VRS) board of trustees has appointed W. Forrest Matthews Jr as agency director.

Matthews succeeds William Leighty, who recently resigned to become chief of staff for Governor Mark Warner (see VRS Director Named Governor’s Chief of Staff ).

Matthews has served as a VRS board member since March 1998 and as chairman of the board since March 2001. He has resigned from both these posts to accept the directorship.

He has been director of finance for Henrico County since 1997. Prior to that, he served as Treasury Division director and has held a variety of positions in both the County of Henrico and the City of Richmond.

The VRS has about 500,000 members and retirees and an investments portfolio of nearly $40 billion.

The appointment is effective March 13, 2002.
