Dotcom Job Losses Slow, But Will It Be E-Nough?

February 28, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - For the first time in eight months, the pace of dotcom layoffs showed signs of slowing in February - but e-commerce businesses suffered cuts much higher than the previous month.

Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas notes that dotcom layoffs fell 9% in February, following a record layoff pace in January, according to the E-Commerce Times.  In real numbers, February saw 11,649 jobs eliminated.

Still, online retailers job cuts rose 57%, to 2,874 jobs, while Internet portal cuts rose 60%, totaling 1,516 job losses.

On the other hand, those numbers pale in comparison to some of the layoffs announced this week outside of the Internet sector.

Challenger said that although technology workers shouldn’t have much trouble finding new work, content developers, marketing people, customer service and office people could have a longer search.
