More Employers Offer Same-Sex Benefits Coverage

December 1, 2000 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Nearly a quarter of large employers (22%) surveyed offer domestic partner benefits, more than twice as many as the 10% in 1997, according to a new survey by Hewitt Associates.

Almost two-thirds (64%) of those cover both same- and opposite-sex partners.

In fact, 44% of the companies in Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work for in America now offer domestic partner benefits, according to SHRM Online.

Proof Statement

A vast majority (87%) requires some proof of domestic partnership, while 92% require the employee to notify the company when a domestic partner relationship ends. 

More than two-thirds (68%) establish a minimum time period before an employee can replace one domestic partner coverage with another.

The Hewitt survey covered 570 large US employers.
