Chicago Treasurer Santos Returns to Work after Winning Appeal
Waving to reporters, hugging her employees, Santos said she would not make any immediate changes to her office staff of 20. But two of the three employees who had testified against her told the Chicago newspaper they would leave the treasurer’s office.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, have vowed to retry Santos. Earlier, she was charged with shaking down a brokerage firm for political contributions. In May of last year, she was convicted for mail fraud and attempted extortion. On Friday, a federal appeals court overturned that ruling. She had served four months of a 40-month sentence.
