Administrative Professionals Feel They're Needed But Not Appreciated

April 20, 2005 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Seventy-one percent of administrative professionals believe that their job function has become more critical over the past few years.

According to a survey by Ajilon Professional Staffing, a specialty staffing and recruiting services firm, 86% of such employees believe that they are an integral part of their boss’ success.

When asked how others feel about them, however, only 52% said that they feel valued and appreciated. Less than 50% believe that their role commands the respect it deserves.

There are also mixed feelings on the satisfaction taken from such jobs.According to the study,32% of administrative professionals are finding fulfillment in their current positions, while 50% believe that the role is a stepping stone to another job.

Additionally, 55% feel that the role of administrative professional offers a deep understanding of how their company operates, making it even easier to transition to another position. Overall, 63% of administrative professionals believe that their work has taught them skills they did not previously have, something that may help them find new jobs.

They don’t do their job solely for the learning experience, however.When asked what intangible they would like more of in the workplace, 29% of those polled asked for increased responsibility, while 29% yearned for more involvement. Following these were independence, training and feedback, with a respective demand of 19%, 12% and 9%.
