On October 8, 1871, the Great Peshtigo Fire claims an estimated 1,200 to 2,400 lives and burns over a million acres in Wisconsin and Michigan.
It is the deadliest fire in U.S. history but receives little attention because the Great Chicago Fire starts - on the same day.
