This has been such a grueling, and in many respects, "nasty" political campaign - but last week the two major Presidential candidates were willing to pole a little fun at themselves - and amiable about having the other poke fun at them as well.

At the time Carleton Fisk hit his famous home run, television cameramen covering the sport were instructed to follow the flight of the ball.   However, in a 1999 interview, NBC cameraman Lou Gerard admitted that the classic shot was not due to his own skills as a cameraman, but rather because he had been distracted by something.   What was it?

"Staying" Power

Gerard, the NBC cameraman stationed inside Fenway Park's famous Green Monster left-field wall, was directed by his producer, Harry Coyle, to follow the ball wherever Fisk might hit it. Gerard responded, ''Harry, there's a rat right here next to me the size of a cat, and it's moving closer.''

''What are you gonna do?'' Coyle replied.   ''Maybe . . . I ought to just stay on Fisk and see what happens.'' 

And he did.
