Census Finds More Americans Have HSA Coverage
Thirteen and one-half million Americans are covered by HSA-eligible insurance plans today — an increase of 18% since last year. Enrollment has tripled over the last five years, from 4.5 million enrollees in January 2007 to 13.5 million enrollees in January 2012, according to a census by America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).
Most Americans – eight million people – are covered by HSA-eligible plans in the large-group market. Approximately three million people were enrolled in HSA-eligible plans in the small-group market and 2.5 million people are enrolled in individual market HSA-eligible plans.
Large group coverage was the fastest growing market between January 2011 and January 2012, rising 26%. Small-group coverage was the second-fastest growing market at 9%.
California was the state with the highest level of HSA enrollment with 1,001,942 enrollees, followed by Texas (755,432 enrollees), Illinois (717,384 enrollees), Ohio (662,999 enrollees) and Florida (539,778 enrollees).
