-The Effect of Choice on Regret Aversion and Trust in Sponsor’s DC Plan
Increasingly, a significant number of adult Americans do not trust the government and the financial industry to help secure their retirement. The absence of trust puts more onus on the individual and plan sponsor to manage retirement funds. Current enrollment nudges such as opt-out and opt-in are insufficient to prompt trust in plan sponsors. “Enhanced Active Choice” (EAC) is an effective communication tool that can be used to increase trust in the plan sponsor, increase DC enrollment and participation rates says consumer behavior expert and architect of EAC: Dartmouth’s Punam Keller. Keller shares new findings on the effectiveness of EAC, and its implications for use within DC plans.Featured Guest Speaker: Dr. Punam A. Keller, Charles Henry Jones Third Century Professor of Management, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth

-Retirement Security—An Inflection Point
We are at a unique inflection point in history with a number of forces converging simultaneously that are forever changing how we approach retirement. Aging populations and workforces are placing an increased strain on the federal, public, and private retirement systems. Global events are wreaking havoc on the capital markets which result in significant market volatility and investor anxiety. The move from defined benefit to defined contribution plans has seen the responsibility and risk of funding and investing for retirement shift from the employer to individuals. Low individual savings rates, combined with vastly different generational financial challenges, regulatory and policy change, as well as evolving technologies are resulting in a rapidly changing retirement landscape. These significant forces are all colliding simultaneously and require all stakeholders in the industry to rethink the approach to helping Americans achieve a secure retirement. Looking ahead, Joe Ready, EVP & Director, Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust sees a key inflection point for millions of Americans that will require a real shift to focus on levers that drive a retirement outcome from first day on the job through retirement.

Workshop 1 – Sponsored by Retirement Loan Eraser (Renaissance Ballroom)
Ready to Improve Retirement Outcomes in Your Plan? Start Preventing Loan Defaults!
Financial wellness is a broad term that is routinely described as a top priority in our industry. Often overlooked in the equation is the hidden risk of 401(k) loan defaults on employee financial well being. Loan defaults keep employees from achieving true retirement readiness since the large majority of participants who default on their loans fully cash out their accounts, forfeiting decades of retirement savings growth. It’s time to close this unnecessary gap. Attendees at this session will hear about a simple and compliant solution that prevents loan defaults and helps improve financial wellness. Complimentary, loan default gap analysis will be available for plan sponsors.
PRESENTERS:
Tod Ruble, Chief Executive Officer, Custodia Financial
Terri Johnson, Senior Executive-Strategic Accounts, Custodia FinancialWorkshop 2 – Sponsored by MetLife (Congressional Hall)
Retirement Income Adequacy Only Matters If the Income Lasts
While saving consistently for retirement, including starting early, can have a significant and positive impact on retirement outcomes, so do the critical distribution decisions that defined contribution (DC) plan participants make at the point of retirement. Join MetLife and the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) for this breakout session that will focus on the retirement income adequacy of DC plan participants, and how behavioral biases can cloud decision-making and lead to premature savings depletion.

Dr. Jack VanDerhei, Research Director, Employee Benefit Research Institute

A Shift in Educating Participants—What Is Financial Wellness? For years, communication with participants centered around investing topics. Times have changed. Today, at many plans, the participant education has shifted from explaining small-cap vs. large-cap to focused discussions around saving and debt– the true drivers of retirement savings. As financial wellness has become a hot topic, the field is getting increasingly crowded and the phrasing cloudy. The challenge for the industry is to make sense of what financial wellness is… is it education, is it a full-blown program, how frequently is it delivered, how is it benchmarked—and who delivers it? Leading providers in this participant education landscape will discuss the industry, its evolution, and what financial wellness means to them.
