Federal TSP Suffers Security Breach
The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB) announced that the cyber attack on a computer belonging to Serco, Inc. resulted in unauthorized access to personal information of approximately 123,000 TSP participants or other recipients of TSP payments. The announcement said there is no indication that any data has been misused.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) provided data to FRTIB and Serco indicating a number of files containing varying combinations of data for 123,201 individuals were accessed. The names, addresses and Social Security numbers of 43,587 individuals were in the files, and in some cases the data also included financial account information and routing information. Another group of 79,614 individuals had their Social Security numbers and TSP-related information taken.
Notices are being sent to all affected individuals with a call center number to obtain support and credit monitoring services. The FRTIB has also placed alerts on the impacted accounts to ensure any account activity received heightened scrutiny.
