Health Law Compliance Seminar Announced

February 29, 2008 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Next month Boston-area plan sponsors can tap into a free health law compliance seminar.

The seminar, for employers, plan fiduciaries and plan service providers, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) and the Massachusetts Department of Insurance.   The seminar will take place March 19 and 20 at the Sheraton Newton Hotel, 320 Washington Street, in Newton, Massachusetts.

Sessions will cover the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other federal laws under Part 7 of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.   Information also will be presented on:

  • fiduciary responsibility,
  • the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA),
  • the Family and Medical Leave Act,
  • health savings accounts,
  • HIPAA privacy and
  • the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.  

Panelists will include representatives of EBSA, the Labor Department’s Employment Standards Administration and Veterans Employment and Training Service, the Massachusetts Department of Insurance, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The seminar is part of EBSA’s health education campaign to help workers and employers, especially small businesses, understand their rights and obligations under various health benefit laws.
