Kiplinger’s Latest Ranking of Best and Worst States for Retirement

Where you choose to live in retirement can make a huge difference in your quality of life.
Kiplinger Online Editor Stacy Rapacon compiled lists of the 10 States Where You Will Want to Retire and 15 Worst States for Retirement. States were measured on factors such as cost of living, average income for age 65 and older households, average health care costs for retired couples and tax friendliness for retirees.
The 10 best states, according to Kiplinger, are:
- South Dakota
- Utah
- Georgia
- Tennessee
- Alabama
- South Carolina
- Washington
- Florida
- Arizona
- Idaho
The 15 worst states are:
- New York
- New Jersey
- California
- Connecticut
- Illinois
- Massachusetts
- Rhode Island
- Montana
- Vermont
- Wisconsin
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Maine
- West Virginia
- Minnesota
