Lehman Adds Political Analysis to Emerging Markets Research

October 18, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) -- Lehman Brothers is enhancing its emerging markets research with political science analysis from the Eurasia Group. Lehman and Eurasia announced their partnership Thursday.

Chaired by Lehman Brothers’ Managing Director Tom Bernard and Eurasia

Group’s Ian Bremmer, the new venture produces reports on 10 countries. Current research encompasses Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Indonesia, Poland, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine.

The two companies say they hope to double their coverage to markets in Latin America, Africa, and other Asian countries by late fall.

A New Emerging Markets Index 

A joint research team from the two companies has also created the Lehman Eurasia Group Stability Index (LEGSI), which rates each country on four risk categories.  

The complex methodology used to create this index incorporates 20 variables – both quantitative and qualitative – that evaluate the political, economic, and social structures leading each country.

Eurasia Group is a New York-based research and consulting firm that focuses on political-risk analysis and general industry research.

Calvert Posts Reconstitution List for Social Index

September 18, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Calvert has posted a preliminary list of membership companies for the Calvert Social Index and has presented it to the Calvert Social Index committee for approval.

The committee is scheduled to meet this week and approve a final membership list, which would be effective after the market closes on Friday, September 21.

Launched on May 1, 2000, the Calvert Social Index starts by taking a base of 1,000 of the largest companies in the United States. From the base of 1,000 companies, Calvert’s Social Research Department analyzes each company using its proprietary social criteria. Calvert considers corporate performance in six broad areas:

  • the environment
  • workplace issues
  • product safety and impact
  • international operations and human rights
  • weapons contracting
  • indigenous peoples’ rights
