How Did We Get Here?
At about the same time that 401(k)s were coming into
their own, mutual funds emerged as a dominant investment
vehicle for that market. The diversified fund offerings made
it relatively easy for plan sponsors to offer participants
the ability to make investment choices, while still sparing
them the complexities of picking individual stocks.
