Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.10% for the week ending April 28, down from last week when it averaged 5.11%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 2.98%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.40%, up from last week when it averaged 4.38%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.31%.

In the week ending April 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 180,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 185,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 179,750, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 177,250  
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday, the Dow was up 614.46 points (1.85%) to close at 33,916.39, the Nasdaq jumped 382.60 points (3.06%) to 12,871.53, and the S&P 500 increased 103.54 points (2.47%) to close at 4,287.50. The Russell 2000 was up 33.91 points (1.80%) to 1,917.94, and the Wilshire 5000 increased 1,020.96 points (2.44%) to 42,878.30.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 1/32, decreasing its yield to 2.826%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was up 27/32, bringing its yield down to 2.895%.
