In the week ending March 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims was 223,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 221,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 227,000, an increase of 750 from the previous week’s revised average of 226,250.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.67% for the week ending March 20, up from last week when it averaged 6.65%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.87%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.83%, up from last week when it averaged 5.80%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.21%. 
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday, the Dow fell 11.31 points (0.03%) to close at 41,953.32, the Nasdaq fell 59.16 points (0.33%) to close at 17,691.63 and the S&P 500 fell 12.40 points (0.22%) to close at 5,662.89. The Russell 2000 fell 13.45 points (0.65%) to close at 2,068.63, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 146.45 points (0.26%) to close at 56,569.43.

The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.235%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.553%.
