Methodology
By the end of 2017, more than 17 million participants had invested over $1 trillion in 403(b) plans, making 403(b) plans the 2nd-largest defined contribution market behind 401(k) plans. While sharing similar objectives and designs, 403(b) and 401(k) plans have key differences that may demand unique recordkeeping and service strategies from plan providers. This guide is intended to assist plan sponsors with understanding the differences in experience and capabilities among select 403(b) plan recordkeepers.
The 2018 PLANSPONSOR 403(b) Market Survey questionnaire was distributed in June 2018 and received 27 responses. This total is a subset of the more than 50 recordkeepers that reported having 403(b) clients as part of our annual Recordkeeping Survey. All data included in the guide is as of December 31, 2017. Profiles are meant to be representative of provider offerings; please contact providers directly with any specific questions regarding the products or services listed in the guide.
