A tarp has many uses, mostly to protect people and objects from elements of weather.

The word “tarp” is short for tarpaulin.
The word “tarpaulin” originated as a compound of the words tar and palling.
Modern tarpaulins are typically made from woven polyethylene, but they originated from canvases tarred by sailors and used to cover objects on ships.
