Reported by Nevin E. Adams
Which U.S. state produced the most – and we’re talking nearly half of that production – last year?
Answer: Illinois
Total production of pumpkins by major pumpkin-producing states totalled 931 million pounds in 2009, and Illinois led the country by producing 429 million pounds of the vined orange gourd.
California and Ohio were also major pumpkin-producing states: each produced at least 100 million pounds, according to the Census Bureau, citing USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service data (see http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/usda/current/VegeSumm/VegeSumm-01-27-2010.pdf).
