The Unicode Consortium currently has 2,789 emoji in its standardized list.

Japanese programmer Shigetaka Kurita created the first emoji (plural for emoji) in 1999 for his work email system.
The word emoji comes from Japanese e (絵, “picture”) + moji (文字, “character”).
