Workers Racking Up Overtime

April 23, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - In the battle to cope with an increased workload brought on by increased staff cuts, American workers are spending more and more time at the office, a survey by a search and recruitment organization found.

The poll by Management Recruiters International, Inc. (MRI) found that:

  • 27.8% of those polled work late five days per week on average, 
  • 35.4% work late three to four days on average, 
  • 32.2% stay after hours once or twice per week, 
  • while only 4.6% said that they never work late

  • 32.6% put in one extra hour, 
  • 43% work two extra hours,  
  • 12.6% stay an extra three hours,  
  • 3.7% fours hours, and 
  • 4.5% work late more than four hours

The sample comprised 1,742 managers and professionals.
